Act Professional

Being on your best behavior is as important as looking good. You can look like a model, but if your behavior is inappropriate, you’ll be out of that room with a one-way ticket back to campus. There are a few things that you should keep in your mind, in no particular order.

  • Look people in the eyes when you shake hands
  • Thank the interviewer for the opportunity
  • Express excitement
  • Smile
  • Be positive
  • Be genuine
  • Be enthusiastic
  • Try to look confident
  • Try to talk clearly
  • Take pauses for tougher questions

  • Lean back or forward in the chair
  • Get too personal
  • Be arrogant
  • Pretend like you know everything
  • Play with pen, hands, or anything else
  • Rush with your responses
  • Speak negatively about things
  • Take sole credit for your accomplishments

This is clearly not an exhaustive list of DOs and DONTs, but it will give you an idea of what to think about when interviewing. Remember, it is the small intangible qualities that can make or break an interview.
